Railway track improvements at Sweden’s Arken Intermodal Terminal have unlocked additional yard space and significantly increased cargo-handling capacity
Arken Intermodal Terminal has significantly increased its yard capacity following a railway infrastructure redesign that has created approximately 4,000 square metres of additional space for trailers and other cargo units.
The project involved rebuilding and streamlining the layout of the terminal’s railway tracks, freeing up valuable land without requiring a major expansion of the overall site. The changes address growing cargo volumes and capacity constraints, particularly in the terminal’s storage areas.
The redevelopment has increased available yard space by around 5%, delivering almost twice the previous yard capacity. Carl Johan Andersson, senior logistics developer at the Port of Gothenburg, said: “In a port, space is a limited resource. Capacity development is therefore not only about building bigger, but just as much about using the infrastructure and land we already have in a smarter way. In this case, five percent more space has given us almost twice the yard capacity.”
