Japanese classification society ClassNK has released a new handbook providing guidance on the implementation of onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS), addressing the technical, regulatory and infrastructure requirements involved in capturing and managing carbon dioxide emissions from ships.
Published on October 23, 2026, the handbook, titled Onboard Carbon Capture Systems Implementation Framework, forms part of ClassNK’s Handbook on Ship GHG Emissions Evaluation series.
The publication is intended to support shipowners, operators and other maritime stakeholders considering the introduction of onboard carbon capture technology, providing a framework for assessing projects across the entire CO₂ management value chain.
According to ClassNK, successful implementation requires more than the installation of capture equipment aboard vessels. It also depends on the availability of infrastructure for unloading, transporting, storing or utilising captured CO₂, alongside reliable mechanisms for measuring and verifying emissions reductions.
