Sunil Kohli, Managing Director, Rahat Cargo said, “Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been experiencing major cargo handling bottlenecks since it’s still short of cargo spaces, dollies and other facilities. Majority of the workforce is new, while cargo operators are dealing with limited space between unloading, screening and inadequate covered facilities for cargo and trucks. The industry is also grappling with the lack of an experienced cargo-handling team, adding to delays as the airport settles into live operations. The NMIA doesn’t have a sterile area for pharmaceuticals where high-value cargo can be opened if required by Customs. The airport is also not equipped with a large scanner for oversized cargo. The forwarders still operating there, report delays of 72 hours or more, higher costs and damaged cargo, all passed on to customers who have little patience for an airport’s learning curve. The airport has inadequate forklifts and ground support equipment. It’s therefore expected from the airport custodian to speed up the process of corrective actions, and the forwarders must also be provided with certain monetary relief by lowering the terminal of other charges until the existing situations get back to normal.”
