DNV on UK ETS site visits: Key steps towards compliance
DNV urges maritime operators to prepare early on by ensuring their Emissions Monitoring Plan is approved and by assembling the documentation needed to support verification of the AER.
UK ETS verification includes a site visit as part of the annual verification process. Maritime operators should prepare early on by ensuring their Emissions Monitoring Plan (EMP) is approved and by assembling the documentation needed to support verification of the Annual Emissions Report (AER).
Classification society DNV dives more about the UK ETS site visit requirements in this statutory news:
Site visits are an important part of the annual verification of the AER. Without a site visit, the verifier is unable to verify the AER. The location and scope of the visit are determined by the verifier’s risk analysis and will focus on the management and monitoring of relevant emissions data. A site visit does not necessarily require attendance on every ship or at every location. DNV’s default approach is to visit the ISM Company.
An in-person site visit should normally be expected. A virtual site visit may be conducted only where the verifier concludes that it can provide reasonable assurance and the maritime operator obtains approval from the regulator. The operator’s application for a virtual site visit must include the information provided by the verifier, for instance on the outcome of the risk analysis, and be submitted by 28 February in the subsequent year. For example, where emissions are reported for the 2027 year, the application for a virtual site visit must be submitted no later than 28 February 2028.
