Container volumes at the Port of Gothenburg remained stable in the first nine months of 2026, with 698,000 TEU handled, compared with 699,000 TEU in the same period last year. However, laden container volumes increased by 2%, while empty container handling fell by 11%, the port said.
Imports of laden containers rose by 7%, while exports declined by 1%, indicating a shift towards a higher proportion of cargo-carrying containers.
“Overall, we are seeing stable development across all cargo segments in a market situation that remains difficult to assess. Cargo volumes are increasing in all segments, which shows that the port continues to be a strong and reliable freight hub for Swedish foreign trade,” says Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales & Marketing at the Port of Gothenburg.
Rail volumes increased by 2% to 403,000 TEU during January–September. Around 60% of the port’s container traffic moves by rail to or from inland destinations, putting the port on course for another record year for rail transport.
