Hapag-Lloyd has completed its acquisition of a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam after securing unconditional antitrust approval. The deal expands the carrier’s terminal portfolio, and gives Hapag-Lloyd a long-term stake in one of Europe’s most advanced container terminals. The agreement, first announced in August 2026, was made through Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), which is targeting a portfolio of up to 30 facilities in key markets over the next few years. APM Terminals will retain operational control of Maasvlakte II, while the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
Maasvlakte II serves as a key European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. The terminal is currently undergoing a major expansion, including additional berth and yard capacity as well as further automation. Following completion of the expansion, the terminal is expected to reach an annual handling capacity of approximately 5.4 million TEU.
“We are very pleased to have completed this transaction and become a shareholder in Maasvlakte II. Together with APM Terminals, we look forward to supporting the terminal’s continued growth and development, creating long-term value for our customers and further strengthening Rotterdam’s role as a major European gateway,” said Dheeraj Bhatia, CTIO of Hapag-Lloyd AG and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals.
