NorthPort has taken delivery of four new hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes as part of a modernisation programme aimed at increasing cargo-handling capacity and reducing emissions at the Port of Manila in the Philippines.
The cranes, manufactured by Mitsui E&S, will strengthen operations at NorthPort, International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s domestic cargo terminal and the country’s primary gateway for domestic cargo.
The new equipment combines large battery energy storage systems with smaller diesel engines to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Compared with conventional RTG cranes, each hybrid unit is estimated to reduce average annual carbon emissions by up to 58.7%.
