The port of Hueneme in California has reported increased high and heavy cargo volumes, helping to support revenue as automobile traffic declined by 13 percent over the last fiscal year. The port said tariffs contributed to the fall in automobile volumes, while growth in high and heavy cargo and a slight increase in container imports helped maintain income.
At its annual State of the Port update, Hueneme also reported approximately USD246 million in active grant-funded projects aimed at improving capacity, efficiency and environmental performance, as it works towards its target of zero-emission operations by 2030.
Workforce development is another component of the port’s long-term vision, with a USD2 million S.P.E.E.D. workforce development initiative under way to bring people into the maritime, logistics, and construction industries – with 37 graduates this year. Moreover, 13 interns and apprentices participated in workforce programmes 10 individuals took part in Women in Construction programmes.
Over the past decade, the port said it has achieved 70 percent growth, with operating revenue increasing 77 percent between 2015 and 2026.
