NorthPort, operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Manila, has taken delivery of four hybrid RTG cranes from Mitsui E&S. The cranes are part of NorthPort’s modernisation programme as the terminal prepares to handle rising cargo volumes and improve operational capacity.
The hybrid RTGs combine battery energy storage with smaller diesel engines, reducing fuel consumption and emissions compared with conventional RTGs. ICTSI estimates that each unit will produce up to 58.7% less carbon emissions annually than a traditional RTG. The hybrid RTGs were ordered last year.
In 2025, NorthPort completed the conversion of six RTGs to hybrid power, replacing their diesel generator sets with smaller engines paired with high-capacity, liquid-cooled battery systems. The cranes operate primarily on battery power, with the smaller engines used to recharge the batteries. NorthPort said the conversion had cut carbon emissions and diesel consumption by 49%, while maintaining the cranes’ operating performance.
Alongside investments in equipment, NorthPort is implementing a structural upgrade programme that includes wharf strengthening at Pier 14 and civil works at Pier 16. The programme is aimed at improving infrastructure resilience to further support safe, and reliable operations.
