India Would Need About 11 Times Its Current Shipbuilding Output To Reach The Global Top 5, New Report Finds
EY-FICCI report urges India to build a 10-year vessel procurement pipeline and improve financing to scale up shipbuilding and repair.
India can accelerate the industrial scale-up of its shipbuilding and ship-repair sector by converting domestic vessel requirements into a predictable, long-term demand pipeline and expanding access to appropriate financing, according to the EY-FICCI report, Optimising India’s shipbuilding and ship repair capacity: Roadmap for industrial scale-up.
The EY-FICCI report, launched at the Maritime India Conference and Expo, recommends considering a national maritime demand and market assurance mechanism to consolidate requirements from PSUs, ports, coastal shipping operators, inland-waterway agencies and other major vessel users into a structured, rolling 10-year procurement pipeline. Standard vessel platforms and repeat procurement programmes could further improve shipyard productivity, supplier investment and financing access.
As per the report, domestic fleet renewal could provide an important demand anchor for the sector. Alongside requirements from coastal shipping, inland waterways and port services, this presents an opportunity to translate domestic maritime demand into a more visible order pipeline for Indian shipyards.
Commander Gautam Nanda, Partner, Business Consulting, EY India, said: “India has an opportunity to build an integrated and globally competitive maritime manufacturing ecosystem. The immediate priority is to convert fragmented domestic vessel requirements into predictable, long-term demand that gives shipyards, suppliers and financiers the confidence to invest. Combining this demand visibility with appropriate financing, stronger domestic supply chains and parallel development of shipbuilding and repair capabilities can help create the scale the industry needs.”
