Seven Japanese companies have agreed to develop an integrated ammonia fuel supply chain and introduce four ammonia-fuelled car carriers.
The project brings together Imabari Shipbuilding, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line), Kyokuyo Shipyard, JERA, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Nihon Shipyard.
The partners described the initiative as the world’s first commercial project to integrate green ammonia procurement, loading infrastructure, ship-to-ship bunkering and vessel operations.
The project will use Japan’s Chubu region as its central hub. JERA will procure green ammonia from markets including India and develop new loading facilities at the ammonia terminal next to the Hekinan Thermal Power Station.
