Kalmar wins straddle carrier orders from Virginia, Tropical Shipping

Kalmar has secured two straddle carrier orders in the United States, including an order for 10 electric machines for the Port of Virginia’s Norfolk International Terminals and a hybrid straddle carrier for Tropical Shipping in Florida. The Port of Virginia order covers 10 Kalmar electric straddle carriers for Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), the port’s largest terminal and the delivery is scheduled to be completed during Q3 of 2027.

Once the machines have been delivered, the terminal will have 113 Kalmar straddle carriers and more than 90 semi-automated stacking cranes, Kalmar said.

The electric straddle carriers will use lithium-ion batteries designed for heavy equipment, allowing operation for up to 600 minutes. They will also be fitted with Kalmar’s collision warning system, which uses visual and audible alarms to alert operators to potential collision risks.

The modernisation of NIT is a centrepiece of the port’s investment strategy. The US$650m investment includes the installation of new STS cranes and a reconfigured container stack yard supported by semi-automated stacking cranes. The project is due to complete in July 2027, boosting terminal’s capacity to 3.6m TEU, and bringing the Port of Virginia’s total to 5.8m TEU.
