Lloyd’s Register helps ArcelorMittal optimise dry bulk terminals
Lloyd’s Register is creating a global operating model for ArcelorMittal’s dry bulk terminals. This will help the steel giant optimise its port network.
ArcelorMittal is well-known as a global steel producer, second only to China’s Baowu Steel Group. But there is much more to the vertically integrated corporation.
The company also mines much of its own iron ore with operations in Canada, Liberia and Brazil, while also owning or controlling dry bulk terminals around the world to handle shipments of ore to its blast furnaces. It operates through terminals in countries like India, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, and Liberia.
“Our terminals operate across very different geographies, regulatory environments and maturity levels, which makes consistency, comparability and disciplined execution essential,” explains Deepak Sachdeva, head of global ports at ArcelorMittal.
For example, the terminals operate with widely differing asset ages, local work cultures, and infrastructure readiness. At the same time each one has to comply with separate regional and national maritime laws.
