MarineSolar Energy Solutions is moving into wider commercial deployment of its NanoDeck® solar technology while continuing development of its next generations, and has appointed Mijs Verhoeven as Director of Strategic Relationships to strengthen engagement with shipowners, ship managers and operators internationally.
Solar power is well established on land, but adoption aboard commercial vessels has remained limited. Ships present a demanding operating environment and conventional solar solutions were not originally designed around the practical realities of operating at sea.
MarineSolar has approached the challenge from the shipping side. Rather than adapting a conventional land-based solar panel, NanoDeck® has been engineered specifically around the operational and environmental requirements of commercial vessels.
From development to commercial deployment NanoDeck® has progressed through extensive development, independent testing and trials at sea, including a pilot installation aboard Rio Tinto’s 204,950 dwt Newcastlemax RTM Cook. The current generation is commercially available today, with the next generation becoming available from January 2027. Current technology achieves solar conversion efficiency of up to 23%, while MarineSolar’s longer-term development roadmap targets approximately 32% within the next three to five years.
