The regional government of Calabria has approved its participation in a development agreement supporting a €93.6m investment programme by Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), the operator of the container terminal at Italy’s Port of Gioia Tauro. The agreement involves Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, the Calabria regional government, investment agency Invitalia and MCT, which is part of Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), majority-owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
The investment programme, covering 2024–2027, aims to increase the terminal’s container handling and storage capacity, particularly to accommodate higher volumes expected from MSC. According to regional government documents, the planned equipment includes automated stacking cranes (ASCs), which account for the largest share of the investment, as well as STS cranes and straddle carriers.
The programme is also expected to create 200 jobs, including 190 operational and 10 administrative positions.
The proposed development agreement provides for up to €29.72m in non-repayable public grants. This includes €28.74m from the Italian government and €980,000 from Calabria. The regional government has allocated a further €20,000 for administrative costs.
