German crane manufacturer Ardelt Kranbau is preparing to assemble a new Tukan material-handling crane at Rhenus Midgard Hamburg, with the first components being delivered to the terminal ahead of on-site assembly.
The crane was ordered in December 2025 and is scheduled for deployment in December 2026. It will have a 50m outreach and a lifting capacity of more than 60t, complementing an existing Ardelt crane installed at the terminal in 2007.
“As components continue to be delivered, the project work carried out so far is becoming increasingly visible on site. Once assembly is complete, the next steps will be taken leading up to the crane’s commissioning,” Ardelt said. “We look forward to continuing to move this project forward together with Rhenus and reaching the next milestones on the path to the completion of Tukan in Hamburg.”
The new machine has been designed around the terminal’s future handling requirements, with increased heavy-lift capacity and a substantially greater landside reach than the existing crane. Ardelt expects it to handle more than 600,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
