Mombasa is strengthening its position as a key conduit of the vehicle trade between Asia and East Africa, as Grimaldi deploys its latest-generation car carriers on services linking the two markets. The Italian shipping group’s newly-built Grande Egitto delivered 1,297 vehicles on its maiden call at the Kenyan port this week. They are destined for both the domestic market and distribution across the wider region.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) chief executive captain William Ruto welcomed Grimaldi‘s decision to include Mombasa among the vessel’s early port calls, and said its deployment reflected the port’s growing suitability to accommodate modern, environmentally-efficient ships.
He also highlighted Mombasa’s role in facilitating trade between Asia and East Africa, with the port serving as a gateway for vehicles entering Kenya and neighbouring markets.
The vessel’s local agent, Nisomar Group, handled the call and had also received Grimaldi’s sister vessel, Grande Shanghai, a couple of months earlier.
