Port of Auckland’s new pilot boat Te Ihu arrived at her new home on 28 October 2026 after completing a four-day crossing of the Tasman Sea from Melbourne, Australia.

The 17.54m vessel, whose name is the Māori word for the bow or prow of a waka or canoe, was constructed by Australian builder Hart Marine to a design developed by French naval architecture company Pantocarene.

Having reached New Zealand waters several days ago, the vessel spent time resting following the demanding ocean voyage, calling at both the Bay of Islands and Whangārei before continuing her journey south.

Te Ihu departed Whangārei at approximately 7am for the final 65-nautical-mile leg to Auckland. Travelling at speeds of between 33 and 36 knots for much of the passage, she reached the Rangitoto Channel, the entrance to Auckland Harbour, around two and a half hours later.
