INDIA: The 23.3 km Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video link on November 3, with passenger services scheduled to start the following day. Developed by a joint venture of Siemens and Tata under a PPP agreement, the elevated line with 23 stations is intended to halve travel times between Maan in the Hinjewadi IT hub area and District Court at Shivajinagar in the central business district. This will make journeys faster, more efficient and reliable in a corridor where significant levels of employment and residential development have led to transport bottlenecks and road congestion.

Line 3 has been developed by the Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd joint venture of Siemens and Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport under a 35-year design, build, finance, operate and transfer PPP contract awarded by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority in September 2019. T

This was the first contract to be awarded under the New Metro Rail Policy approved by the Indian government in August 2017, which requires an element of private financing to be included in projects seeking central government support. The contract is extendable for a further period of 25 years.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Modi sayd metro PPP was ‘a model of development whose success gives further momentum to the progress of the country’.
