QTerminals Kramer Rotterdam has started construction of a charging station for ZESpacks at the RCT depot on the Maasvlakte. Inland vessels will soon be able to charge and collect interchangeable battery containers supplied by Zero Emission Services (ZES) at the depot.

The permit for the charging station has been granted, and work has begun on the technical preparations and cable installation. Once completed, the facility will be able to charge two ZESpacks simultaneously.

The charging station will have a total capacity of 2 MW, with two charging bays, each providing 1 MW for each ZESpack. There will also be space to temporarily store a third battery container. Each ZESpack has a capacity of 2.9 MWh, of which 2.6 MWh is usable. According to ZES, this provides enough energy for an inland vessel to operate electrically for approximately seven to eight hours, covering a distance of around 50 to 100km.

The facility will be ZES’s sixth charging location in the Netherlands. The company already operates charging facilities in Alphen aan den Rijn, Alblasserdam, Den Bosch, Moerdijk and Waalhaven in Rotterdam. The new location will enable electric vessel operations to and from the Maasvlakte.
