As the cost of diesel has reached an all-time high, experts at fleet telematics provider Radius say now is a more important time than ever for fleet operators to tackle one of the biggest culprits of fuel wastage: idling. They have revealed how much fuel fleets could be losing to idling and shared their top tips for reducing it.
“As diesel prices have reached their highest to date, it’s more important now than ever to consider how your team’s driving habits could be impacting your fuel consumption, and idling is often one of the biggest culprits of wastage. Even small changes can result in significant cost savings over time, especially for large fleets and heavy vehicles such as HGVs.”
The cost of idling can go beyond just fuel consumption. However, according to Radius, idling doesn’t just affect fuel consumption; it can also cause wear and tear on the vehicles themselves that can quickly become expensive. This can include:
Radius also adds that an idling engine may produce twice the carbon emissions of a moving car, meaning that if your fleet frequently idles, it can offset your impact reduction efforts and reverse your progress towards carbon neutrality.
