Russia expects cargo transits along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to more than double in 2026, marking a substantial increase in Arctic shipping despite Western sanctions, although volumes remain far below Moscow’s original ambitions for the route.

Transit cargo will exceed 7 million tonnes this year, Vladimir Panov, head of the Arctic Directorate at state nuclear corporation Rosatom, said on Oct. 27. Total cargo traffic along the route is expected to surpass 40 million tonnes, also a record, he said.

“The Northern Sea Route has two competitive advantages – efficiency and security,” Panov said, adding that the summer-fall route between Asia and Europe is 30% shorter than the passage through the Suez Canal.
