The United States and Denmark have signed a maritime cooperation agreement aimed at expanding the U.S. shipbuilding workforce, attracting Danish investment to American shipyards and accelerating vessel construction and repairs through advanced technology.

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen signed the memorandum of understanding Oct. 22. The agreement establishes a framework for drawing on Danish maritime expertise to strengthen American shipbuilding capacity and create new commercial opportunities for Danish suppliers.

Denmark is home to Maersk (OTC: AMKBY), the world’s second-ranked ocean container line.

The partnership targets workforce training, maritime equipment and technology, and specialized services supporting ship construction, repairs and retrofits. It also calls for exploring local partnerships and joint ventures to help expand and modernize U.S. shipyard capacity.
