More than a century after the legendary Titanic sank due to a collision with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912, a rare piece of its history has resurfaced and created a sensation. It is the original insurance policy document covering the ‘total loss’ for $5 million.
The piece of paper, which is probably worth thousands of dollars, is scheduled to go up for auction in Devizes, England, on November 21, 2026.
What makes it interesting is the fact that it was signed just 2 weeks before the Titanic began its maiden voyage, from Southampton, England, to New York on April 10, 1912. The parent company, Oceanic Steam Navigation Limited, created the ‘total loss’ policy with 77 insurers, each taking a share of the risk.
One of the biggest insurers of the policy was Atlantic Mutual, which paid $100,000 then, equivalent to $3.5 million today, after the ship sank.
