The U.S. Postal Service says it is ready for the holiday shipping rush and expects to improve upon its delivery performance during the 2025 peak season, when mail items and packages were delivered within 2.5 days on average compared to 2.8 days during the same period the prior year.

Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 U.S. Postal Service mail and package volumes will increase about 40% for the holiday season.

The carrier has hired more than 10,000 seasonal workers, down from 14,000 last year and from 40,000 just a few years ago. Since 2020, a combination of improved staffing, reduced supervisor vacancies and lowered overtime rates has resulted in a more stable workforce and reduced the need for temporary help, the carrier said in a news release on Thursday.

“We have been preparing all year for this peak season, and we have enough capacity to handle whatever comes our way,” Postmaster General David Steiner said.
