Villa Vie Residences has suspended operations of its residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey in Cambodia, forcing residents to disembark as soaring fuel costs push the company toward financial restructuring.
The Fort Lauderdale-based company announced Tuesday that it is evaluating restructuring and recapitalization options over the next 60 days after a sharp increase in fuel expenses made its current operating model financially unsustainable.
According to the company, monthly fuel expenses on an equivalent per-cabin basis have surged from a historical average of approximately $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000 in parts of Asia, an increase of as much as 344%.
The company attributed the increases to the conflict with Iran, which began in late February and has disrupted energy markets and shipping operations worldwide.
