The Democratic victory in the US midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov 3, taking control of both the House and the Senate, could have important indirect implications for the US stance and behaviour at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Experts say the results are part of a broader shift back toward climate action, following Lula’s re-election in Brazil in October. It’s a signal of constructive future US re-engagement in global climate diplomacy, including cutting emissions from ships at the IMO.
The Democrats will also be able to wield Congressional oversight over the Trump administration, forcing greater transparency and accountability. This could make it more difficult for Trump’s representatives to mix commercial and political interests and to threaten economic retaliation against other countries, according to experts.
The Democrats won the elections by campaigning around issues like lowering living costs, expanding clean energy and acting as a legislative check on executive power.
