WinGD's Variable Compression Technology for Dual-Fuel Engines Wins BV Approval

The technology allows dual-fuel engines to adjust compression ratios according to fuel type and engine load, helping improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has granted type approval to engine maker WinGD’s variable compression ratio (VCR) technology for marine engines.

The system allows WinGD’s dual-fuel engines to adjust compression ratios according to the fuel used and operating conditions, improving fuel efficiency and reducing consumption and emissions, BV said in a press release last week.

Conventional engines have a fixed compression ratio set during design. WinGD’s VCR system changes the piston position to alter the combustion chamber volume, allowing the ratio to be adjusted during operation.

The technology can also improve efficiency when engines operate at part load. Its mechanical design does not change the engine’s footprint or installation requirements, making it suitable for newbuilds and potential retrofits.
