A highly complex logistical operation mobilized concessionaires and technical teams to transport an 845-ton transformer, coming from Guarulhos, to the Port of São Sebastião, on the north coast of São Paulo. Arrival at the terminal was scheduled for this Wednesday (1st), from where the equipment will continue to be shipped to Saudi Arabia.

For the first time, a load of this size covers the entire route, including the southern contour of Rodovia dos Tamoios. To make this action possible, engineering studies were carried out and specific operational measures were adopted along the route.

The transport, carried out over several days and always at night, required temporary closures, interventions at toll plazas and detailed planning to allow the passage of the complex, of exceptional dimensions.

The transformer is approximately 10.7 meters long, 4.52 meters wide and 4.92 meters high. Attached to a special structure, the set reached approximately 138 meters in length.

On Rodovia dos Tamoios, the journey was divided into three stages: plateau section, between kilometers 11.5 and 54; Serra Nova, with scheduled closures in tunnels and traffic diversions; and, finally, the southern contour to the port.

According to the president of the Port of São Sebastião, Ernesto Sampaio, the operation reinforces the terminal’s capacity to receive large cargo. “We have the infrastructure and strategic location to meet this type of demand safely and efficiently,” he stated.

Projects

The initiative also highlights the relevance of investments in infrastructure to enable the transport of special cargo and increase logistics competitiveness. In this sense, ongoing projects at the port seek to support this type of operation.

Among them is the new road access to the Port of São Sebastião, a state government project in its final phase. With an investment of more than R$51 million, the connection will create a direct route between the highways and the pier, allowing trucks to access the terminal without passing through the central area of the city. The expectation is to reduce congestion, increase road safety and speed up the flow of large loads.

Another project is the leasing of the SSB01 multipurpose terminal, currently in the modeling phase by the federal government. The initiative foresees up to R$2.5 billion in private investments to expand the port infrastructure, with new berthing berths, operational areas and handling systems.

With the expansion, the port should also start to operate containerized cargo and expand its logistics capacity. The estimate is that, at the end of the investments, the terminal will reach annual handling of up to 1.35 million TEUs and around 3.45 million tons of solid bulk, reinforcing its suitability for complex operations such as the mega cargo transported this week.
