Port of Itajaí records fire in crane and raises alert about safety on the pier

The Port of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, was the scene of a fire in its operational area, raising attention to security protocols in the port complex. The recent incident was recorded on the night of Saturday, April 25, 2026around 21h45in the terminal currently managed by JBS Terminaislocated in the central port area of Itajaí.

According to information confirmed by the Porto Superintendence, the fire reached a Mobile Harbor Crane (MHC) type craneessential equipment for container loading and unloading operations. The flames completely consumed the structure of the equipment, generating a dense column of smoke visible in different parts of the city. Despite the severity of the incident, there was no official record of victims or injurieswith only material damage being counted.
During emergency response, SAAM tugswith emphasis on the WITH Antaresplayed a strategic role in supporting the containment and monitoring teams in the port area, working together with the Fire Department and the port’s internal brigade. The quick mobilization prevented the flames from spreading to nearby containers, docked vessels or other critical structures at the terminal.
The episode occurs a few days after another incident involving the beginning of a fire in a port operation, also reported in previous shifts of Jornal Portuário, which raises an alert about the need to reinforce preventive inspections and fire-fighting systems within the complex.
According to documents from the port authority itself, scenarios involving fire, explosion and leak in MHCs They are already included in the port’s official emergency plans, with specific protocols for a prompt response.
The causes of this Saturday’s fire are still to be investigated by the competent authorities, and the expectation is that a technical expert will identify whether there was a mechanical failure, electrical failure or other external factor related to the equipment.
The case reignites discussions about the security of operational assets, especially at a time of resumption and strengthening of container operations at the Port of Itajaí.
