Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation has sold its equity stake in the Northwind offshore wind farm in Belgium.
The company sold its stake in Northwind to the Publiwind consortium comprising the Belgian insurance company Ethias, SOCOFE SA, and SFPIM, the Belgian sovereign wealth fund.
Subject to approval from relevant authorities, the transaction is scheduled to be completed during fiscal year 2026.
Northwind is located 37 km from shore in the Belgian North Sea. Its 72 turbines over 14.5 sq km generate green energy that can power approximately 200,000 households. Since March 2024, Northwind has been jointly owned by Aspiravi Offshore and Sumitomo Corporation, with Parkwind continuing to manage operations and maintenance.
This follows JERA Nex BP’s buy of stakes in two Belgian offshore wind farms from Sumitomo. The joint venture between energy major BP and Japan’s largest utility JERA has taken full ownership of the 219MW Northwester 2 wind farm by acquiring Sumitomo’s 30% interest.
The JV also bought Sumitomo’s 39.02% stake in the 165MW Nobelwind project, taking its share in that asset to 80.1%. The financial details were left undisclosed.
Sumitomo has been involved in every stage of these projects, from development and construction to operation, and has achieved stable operations and profitability over the long term, while contributing to the expansion and development of offshore wind power in Belgium.
