Operations at Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal, a box terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), were halted after a fatal dockside accident. The incident left one docker dead and two others injured, prompting an immediate shutdown at the terminal.
Incident Details
According to reports, empty containers toppled from an anchored vessel during heavy rain and gusty winds, landing on trucks engaged in terminal work. The workers were carrying out routine operations when the containers fell, leading to the fatality and injuries.
Safety Review Underway
JNPA said it is extending support to those affected and has initiated a detailed investigation, including a root-cause analysis. The port authority also stated that prescribed operational procedures and safety protocols are being followed across terminals.
Wider Impact
The accident adds to operational disruptions at Nhava Sheva, where monsoon conditions have already affected port activity. The terminal shutdown is likely to draw attention to container-handling safety and weather-related risk management at major Indian ports.
