US secretary of state Marco Rubio on Saturday stated India and Türkiye have proposed ideas to facilitate the movement of grain shipments through the Black Sea amid strikes in the wake of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Rubio said the disruption posed a threat to global food security and, to some extent, energy security.

He said several countries had expressed their willingness to contribute to efforts to restore the movement of vessels through the Black Sea, with India and Türkiye putting forward proposals.

The secretary of state, stating that interest in meeting the world’s grain needs through the Black Sea has been revived, said, “Türkiye, for example, has been consistently and at one point did have an agreement in place in the past, that then of course fell apart.”
