The governor of New Jersey Mikie Sherrill has told local port and terminal operators that importing Russian diesel would be a violation of federal law.
In a letter dated November 2, 2026, addressed to port and terminal operators in New Jersey, Sherrill said the planned importation of Russian diesel fuel, reportedly authorised by the administration of United States president Donald Trump, directly conflicts with federal law.
The letter follows the Trump Administration’s recent authorization of Russian diesel imports through the Treasury Department, with tankers potentially bound for the east coast.
The governor warned that purchasing or unloading Russian fuel currently bound for the east coast of the United States would likely subject businesses and individuals to harsh penalties, both civil and criminal.
