Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop has been selected to supply the complete propulsion package for a new Multi-Role Environmental Vessel being built for the Royal Danish Navy by Karstensens Skibsværft.
The vessel is one of four ordered by the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation to enhance Denmark’s environmental response and defence capabilities. Construction of the series is underway at Karstensens’ shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, with the first vessel expected to enter service in 2029.
Designed for year-round operations in Nordic waters, the ship will be fitted with two 2,200kW Steerprop SP 45 W azimuth propulsors and a 750kW SP 10 TT tunnel thruster, together with bridge and propulsion control systems. The integrated package will support the vessel’s DNV Ice Class 1A notation, enabling operation in demanding ice conditions.
The vessel’s propulsion control system will also comply with DNV SP2 cyber security requirements, marking a significant milestone for Steerprop. Deliveries of the propulsion equipment are scheduled to begin in March 2027.
