BYD earnings, Japanese airline financials, Genting’s New York casino tables
Welcome to Your Week in Asia.
Chinese electric vehicle leader BYD has already indicated that it has seen a spike in sales, thanks to the impact of the Iran war, and more detail will come with its first quarter earnings this week. But for all its success in Asia and elsewhere, the automaker has come under scrutiny for its labor practices in Brazil, and it is struggling in Japan.
Foreign tourist arrivals in Japan were up 3.5% year on year in March, likely buoying Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), but when the two airlines announce their earnings for the fiscal year through that month, attention will be focused on how the Middle East conflict is affecting jet fuel supplies and passenger demand. Regional carriers such as Qantas and Cathay Pacific have already announced flight cuts due to soaring fuel prices.

Nuclear weapons treaty meeting
Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, including nuclear-armed China, will gather at United Nations headquarters in New York through May 22 to review the agreement. China biotechnology conference
Major companies in China’s increasingly powerful biotech sector gather in Shanghai for a two-day forum. The industry is coming off a banner year in 2025, when global pharmaceutical companies made big licensing deals in China and several biotech companies went public in Hong Kong. Analysts expect this momentum to continue, although tightening regulatory scrutiny and geopolitical risks pose challenges.
Genting brings in casino tables in New York
Genting Malaysia will launch New York City’s first live table games at Resorts World New York City, transforming the slots-only venue into a full-scale casino. BYD earnings
BYD releases its earnings for the January-March term, the first gauge of the windfall the Chinese automaker is expecting this year, as elevated oil prices push consumers toward EVs. The company is hoping for a quick, export-driven turnaround after a disappointing 2025, when it was plagued by fierce domestic competition.
GoTo earnings
GoTo is set to announce its earnings for its first quarter this year. With Singaporean tech rivals Grab and Sea already turning a profit, the focus is likely to be on whether GoTo can achieve profitability in the coming months. When the company announced its 2025 earnings in March, CEO Hans Patuwo expressed concern that “heightened oil prices for sustained periods of time will have an adverse impact on our business.”

Japanese airlines earnings
Japan’s two biggest airlines, ANA and JAL, announce earnings for the fiscal year through last month. Both carriers saw an increase in passengers due to the rise in overseas visitors to Japan. They will raise international flight fuel surcharges, starting with tickets issued from May onward, due to high fuel costs caused by the Iran war. Analysts and investors will be watching closely for any updates on the impact of rising costs and the outlook for air travel demand. Chinese airlines, including China Eastern, are also expected to publish results this week.
