Government of SP announces free flow with three gantries and cheaper tolls

The Government of São Paulo announced the implementation of the free flow electronic toll system on the Anchieta and Imigrantes highways, the main connections between the capital and the coast of São Paulo. The new model will have three charging points along the roads, replacing the traditional system of plazas with gates.

The proposal is part of the road infrastructure modernization process and seeks to improve traffic flow, especially during periods of heavy traffic, such as holidays and summer seasons.
Unlike the conventional model, free flow charges automatically through gantries equipped with sensors and cameras, which identify vehicles in motion, without the need to stop. The technology is already used in other countries and is beginning to be expanded in Brazil.
According to the state secretary responsible for the area, the expectation is that the new system will result in lower fares for drivers. This is because the model allows for charging that is more proportional to the use of the highway, in addition to reducing operational costs.
Another highlighted point is the greater fare fairness, as the user will only pay for the distance actually traveled, unlike the current system, in which the price is fixed regardless of the distance traveled.
The measure should also positively impact logistics and cargo transport, facilitating access to the Port of Santos and contributing to greater efficiency in the flow of production.
Despite the benefits, the system will require adaptation from drivers, who will need to be aware of the payment method, which can be made through electronic tags or subsequent charges linked to the vehicle’s license plate.
The implementation of free flow on the Anchieta and Imigrantes highways reinforces the São Paulo government’s strategy of investing in technology and mobility, with a focus on reducing congestion, increasing efficiency and improving the user experience.
