India’s manufacturing landscape is increasingly being shaped not only by production capacity but also by how effectively businesses can maintain visibility across complex and expanding supply chains. According to recent data, India’s industrial production grew 6.7% year on year in July 2026, supported by 7.3% growth in the manufacturing sector.
Traceability is often viewed as the ability to locate a product, batch or component at a particular point in the supply chain. Its larger value, however, lies in connecting the complete journey of that product, from sourcing and production to storage, distribution and, where relevant, its eventual use or return. It creates a continuous information trail that allows businesses to understand not only where a product is but also what has happened to it along the way.
Tracking tells a business where a product is at a given point, while traceability helps establish its complete journey, history and the events associated with it. In pharmaceuticals, traceability can mean linking a medicine to its batch, manufacturing and distribution history. In automotive manufacturing, it can connect a component to its supplier, production stage and finished vehicle. In FMCG, it can help trace a batch from manufacturing through distribution, making targeted recalls and quality checks more precise.
